On October 7, 1998, the Karen Labor Conference that held in the liberated area of Kawthoolei (Karen Land) in Burma from October 7 to 9, 1998 formed the Federation of Trade Unions-Kawthoolei. At this conference, the delegates from seven districts of Kawthoolei attended the conference. After the formation of FTUK, the affiliate unions such as Education Workers Union (EWU), Health Workers Union (HWU) and Agricultural Workers Union were formed and the union leaders were also elected at this conference. The union leaders from FTUB and AFL-CIO also attended the conference to give support and advice. The FTUK also maintains close relationship with the FTUB and AFL-CIO, in order to deal with problems effectively of the workers and trade unions and to further the aims and objects of the Federation.

The FTUK has (7) local unions in Kawthoolei districts namely;

  • Doothatu District

  • Toungoo District

  • Klerlweetu District

  • Mergui/Tavoy District3.

  • Mutraw District

  • Dooplaya District

  • Pa-an District
